A
bit more than a year ago, a massive earthquake shook Nepal. Among all
the NGOs and INGOs involved in the relief effort, you chose to
support us, Rangjung Yeshe Shenpen, to help people on your behalf. We
want to thank you again for that. One year later, you may wonder what
we did with the donations we collected. We would like to share with
you what Shenpen did and what the impacts of your contribution were.
In
December 2015, with your and many others’ contributions, Shenpen
gathered over $220,000 and spent it in more than a hundred different
villages. We estimate that around 22,000 people benefited from our
collective work in many different ways. We provided tarpaulins and
tin sheets in order to make temporary shelters and protect people
during the rainy season. We distributed over $40,000 to provide food
(rice, lentils, vegetables, oil, salt, etc.) for 4,565 people for a
month. But since life has to go on even if many people lost
everything in the rubble, we provided school supplies for over 2,000
students and, in addition, we gave medicine and clothes to
approximately 2,000 other victims of the earthquake.
Finally,
Shenpen also provided some financial allocations to victims and
redistributed over $50,000. With those sums, people were able to buy
prescribed medicine, kitchen tools, clothes, blankets, etc.
WHAT
IS GOING ON NOW? Having learned from
that successful relief experience, in November 2015, Shenpen moved
toward reconstruction. Under the guidance of Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche,
Founding President of Rangjung Yeshe Shenpen, and in collaboration
with the monks of Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling, we started an important
reconstruction project. The project consists in sponsoring and
overseeing the construction of the 55 houses that will make the new
village of Tallo-Aale, Dhola-7, in the district of Dhading.
The
community members are all involved in the construction of their
future village. With an engineer living on the site, they are
currently building their own earthquake-proof homes. At the same
time, they are building their knowledge and skills. Some of them wish
to use this new knowledge and start a small construction business for
the profit of the entire community and the other victims of the
earthquakes. Shenpen is launching a fundraising
campaign
in order to help the villagers build solidly and promptly their 55
houses. We hope that you will follow the progress of this beautiful
and meaningful project. And who knows, maybe you will want to
be part of it!
